The secret grove
Returning to grove was easier now that he could hear her and feel her strength now. Lily's voice carried out over the breezes and drew him there now. Not so much words, but murmurs, tiny fluttering giggles of innocence and the light that made his heart glow as much as the grove itself. He stood at the gates and watched beyond as light flickered and played just out of reach. His grace and offering were accepted and the gate swung open to him, closing gently behind again as the vines intertwined to hold them fast and safe again against intrusion. Solace moved deeper into the grove that was teaming with new life, green and strong again, mostly along the paths where he and the beautiful keeper had shared their closest moments. Seeing her there now in a pool of light flickering down through the canopy, he was nearly startled by her beauty as if never having seen her before. "Do I intrude?" He stopped and bowed, asking her permission before coming closer.
It was strange how she felt him at the gate when she would not have before.. She looked up from the garland of flowers she was twining and her smile was soft as she watched him approach. "Never." She replied to his query, smiling brighter, her eyes alight and nearly glowing a vibrant green-blue. "You're always welcome where I am." She held out her hand to him to further invite him to join her. The tiny shining and fluttering creatures circled around them like sparklers and darted in as if to investigate him and then back out with tiny giggles.
Solace reached to her hand and knelt down before her, looking at her wreath of greenery and the light about her. "Who are these that sing with you while you weave?" He laughed a little and saw that the light that darted in and out around her was a series of tiny creatures, moving with a purpose to appraise his presence. "Do they approve of my being her as you do?"
"I haven't found all their names yet." She told him, holding his hand while she lifted her other for one of the tiny creatures to land and perch. She turned to him with the softest, sweetest of smiles as she gently held out one of the tiny winged creatures. "Of course they approve.. we made them."
Words could not form the feeling conveyed in his expression as he heard her explanation. He lifted his other hand to the creature that lit upon her fingers and smiled. "We... then hello. I think I need to know you," he told the tiny glowing form.
He was met with a giggle that matched the creature's size as it lifted in a hop from her fingers to his. Tiny but perfectly formed, the female gave a slight bow as she landed in his hand. "We.." Lily whispered, confirming softly as she echoed his word, Her fingers gripped his hand gently. "Do.. you approve?"
"Very," he nodded, quite pleased though a little embarrassed for having not realized before that he'd become a father. He glanced at the others... so many? His laugh was as light as their glow. He gently set a kiss above the creature in his hand and let her fly away, turning his kiss to their beautiful mother.
The hand that had held their daughter now brushed his cheek as she happily returned the kiss. She'd missed him in his absence though she understood he had to heed the call of others who needed him. She was beyond happy that he'd returned and more so that he could share the wonder of their offspring with her.
"How many... and when? I owe you the deepest of apologies for being gone so long," he whispered gently. "Did they cause you pain?" He couldn't taste any regret in the kiss and felt the happiness shine from her.
"No.. quite the contrary it was.. deeply beautiful and wonderful... there was no pain.. only incredible love.." She looked into his eyes, her fingers on his cheek and his lips, shushing his apologies. "A few weeks after you had gone.. I awoke and felt as if I would burst from the joy within me.." She laughed softly and waved to the sparkles in the grove. "I suppose one might say that's what happened." Lily brought her hand back to his cheek.
In truth, he would have heard her call and certainly felt it if there had been a moment of darkness that crossed over her, so there must have been none to tarnish such an event. "Burst... and here they are. They're amazing... you're amazing. I had never thought... not so much as considered after seeing what was wrought from my brother's efforts that.. I'm so very glad they're nothing at all alike."
A shadow crossed her face at the mention of his brother and the thought of the child that had come of it. The shadow was fleeting and gone in a blink, her smile returning. "You are not your brother and what we shared was nothing like what he did to me.. Ours are beautiful and full of what they were created with.. I'm so very happy that they came, that we were blessed with them."
