****Later****
She didn't assume he'd stay once he woke up and was on his feet, she thought the opposite in fact, figuring he'd be running for the door as soon as he was able. Gabriella was thankful that Aberto had Claude stalking her as much as he had and was expecting her, he'd met her on the road and they were able to get the man up here and resting comfortably. While he rested, Gabriella was unpacking and trying to be quiet about it. She already knew she'd be staying here a long time and Aberto had provided her a nice room with a small balcony since he knew of her fondness to enjoy the elements when she could. She probably had three times as much stuff as most people who arrived or would arrive here, but she'd also been more prepared for the trip and well off to start with. Still she'd only brought what she could reasonably carry in the SUV she drove, some clothes, a few personal items, and some supplies Claude had requested. Gabriella moved around the room, opening the boxes and bags to put her clothes into drawers, humming quietly.
The shiver woke him, rippling and tensing everything down to the tip of his tail. Why was it so cold? His head turned sharply toward the sound of the movement and again to view the room he was in. Reds and golds filled his sight, wavering and shifting, telling him where the breathing, living things were and the blues and greens around them telling him about the objects and furnishings of what seemed to be living quarters of some kind. Whose house was he in? Why was he here? Twice he blinked and each time, two lids on each eye flickered to clear his sight back to its normal human vision. Someone's grandmother had kidnapped him to mow her lawn or cut firewood from what he could tell from the way the room really looked. He glanced back toward the part he'd seen as red... and still saw red, vaguely recognizing the red head from the cafe.. how did they get here, when and .. "Why?" His voice wasn't quite solid yet, but the graveled query sounded much as it should.
She paused mid motion and turned with a slight pout, her hands holding the skirt, that she'd been about to put away, up against her waist. "Because it was on sale and I loved how it showed off my legs." Gabriella replied, her pout fading and a smile replacing it. "Hey there.. you're awake.." The clothing was dropped back into the bag and she walked toward the bed.
He shivered again and pulled his arm around himself, or tried, feeling the pull against his skin. He patted himself over. Bandages... he'd been bleeding. He looked up at her again, pulling his arm tighter around himself for warmth. "Did you...?" He pointed to the wraps and felt himself balling up more, visibly wracking through another chill.
"Yes." She replied softly, concern crossing her features as she grabbed another blanket from the stack of linens Claude had given her. "You're cold.." She wasn't sure if it had to do with his injuries or his mutation which appeared to be some kind of reptile. "How is the pain?" She asked, putting one of her warm hands to his cheek as she tucked the blanket around him.
His smile was warm, much more than he felt. "It's great. The rest needs work." He grabbed the edge of the blanket and burrowed into it. His chills calmed somewhat though he rocked a little. He seemed lost and more than a little confused. "Why? You helped me. Guns and all that, but you helped me? Can't you see what I am?"
"A good looking man? Yeah I can definitely see that, but that's no reason for me to let you get shot by some ignorant assholes who think they can play god and pass judgement and sentencing over others." Her voice came out angry, her eyes growing more stormy, and she looked away for a moment before turning back more calmly. Gabriella found a warm smile for him as she fussed lightly with making sure the blanket was snug around him. She reached to gently smooth a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "What's your name?"
"Pieter. Yours?" He watched her, trying to figure her out. Her eyes... he remembered something from the talk in the diner, remembered what he'd thought he'd heard at least. Was she one, too? "And where are we?"
"Gabriella." Her smile warmed and her hand brushed his cheek again. "We are in a hotel.. an old hotel that is no longer open.. set way back in the woods.. We're among.. friends.. others who are like us."
His lip curled up with a slight laugh. He really wanted to believe her, but nearly being killed made it hard to pass off the doubt. "Picked up by a hot girl and dragged off to a hotel, tucked in for the night... and told I have friends like me? f*ck, I am having -the- best dream of my life. Did you take advantage of me while I was out?"
"No, but maybe later when you're awake to participate and enjoy it." She laughed and her cheeks grew warm with a blush, surprising herself with the bold remark and moreso that she was actually serious. "I am a doctor though, so you know if you feel the need, I'd be happy to give you a full examination right now. You know if you're worried any of your parts are missing or not working right.. I can check them out, for you."
"They work, trust me. A doctor? Am I going to live? If not, I've got a dying wish you can help me with. Heh... a doctor... one hell of a dream," he shook his head. The blanket was helping and he relaxed a little, but this place was still a mystery. "What happened to the other guys?"
"One is dead for sure and the other... well, he went to a dark place." She informed him about the men from the diner, her gaze rested on his face, the concern easing from her features as he relaxed and interacted with her. "Are you still cold? The heat isn't up very high, I tend to keep myself warm but I can turn it up more or start a fire.. we have a fireplace.. " She motioned to it across the room in the sitting area. "I think I got one of the best suites.. or what used to be.. it needs a little work.. "
His tail rose and waved at her. "Still cold. It's in my nature. A fire sounds nice... as long as I'm not in it or under it." His mind flashed back to something whip-like and blazing and someone on fire on the floor. He huddled under the blanket, tightening it down on his shoulders. "Thank you. You're really going out of your way. So... friends huh?"
She reached out almost grabbing his tail with her fingers and smiling at the gesture he made. AT his last question she kind of paused and sighed and then nodded. "Yes friends.. sorry.. I'm still getting used to calling my ex a friend. We are, but it seems sort of... weird, you know?" She stood and moved across the room to the fireplace, noting that it had recently been cleaned, she piled in a few logs to start with. A flick of her fingers brought flames to life that licked around the wood, setting a few more logs on top and then placing the screen in front of it, she turned to come back over to check on Pieter.
