[Early August 2003]
The auditorium - Baker Institute
They'd made friends fast... something that was totally foreign to Drake. Not many folks understood him or took the time. Tyler didn't need an explanation to understand. He'd said it himself... a sort of long lost brother. Coming from the Veinna crew, that meant a lot. They were among the "who's who" of the Haven world and even so much as a pinky's grip in that universe made him feel accepted.
He waited on the stage, running bored sounding scales on the keys, just to have the company of sound. Tyler was supposed to meet him here for some practice... after all, he'd sworn he wasn't going to let the boy give up. An accountant for chrissakes... with a voice like that? Oh, hell no.. he needed to be on the stage. Drake would do his best to build his confidence. He waited... slowly shifting in a little Billy Joel.. his usual standby...
Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart tell me why
You are still so afraid?
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only
So many hours in a day
But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you an just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you
Slow down you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight
Too bad but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself
That you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong
You know you can't always see when you're right
You got your passion you got your pride
But don't you know only fools are satisfied?
Dream on but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize
Vienna waits for you
Slow down you crazy child
Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while
It's alright you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize...
Vienna waits for you.
But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you an just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
Why don't you realize...Vienna waits for you
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you
[taking the liberty of the pun.. and waiting for a 'Veinna' instead!]
Tyler practically skipped down the hall, a broad and joyful smile on his face. He had made a real friend here...something he had not done in a long time. Finally someone who really understood him, outside of his (twin) cousins. He threw open the doors of the auditorium and strode purposefully into the room. His smiled brightened even more to hear the words of the song Drake was singing. Tyler ran and jumped onto the stage, with the flair that was his alone. He grinned putting his hand over his heart. "Your words, touch me so deeply. It's like that song was meant for me...and I don't just mean the name. Strangely fitting..." He murmured the last part as what had started as a joke about the song...became sincere.
"Hey, man.. glad you could make it," Drake smiled and pulled himself off the bench to give Tyler a New York style handshake and hug... like any brother would... never mind that he was from Massachusetts, he felt it just the same. "Nice entrance.. you do this for a living?" He winked and motioned to the bench. "Have a seat... let's start with something easy, okay? You been singing today? Giving your heart wings?"
After returning the hug with feeling, Tyler sat on the bench and smiled, letting out a soft sigh. "Everday... I sing everyday." He looked at Drake. "Can't help it, even when I was locked in the office with piles of numbers...I sang." He shrugged. "So what are we working on, Oh Wise Master?"
"Ahhh... boy, have I got you fooled, eh? Wise is one thing I am not, but thank you, I will take the compliment, just the same," he said switching into instructor mode.. a role he hadn't played in several years. Teaching an adult would be different than teaching a Sunday schooler, but the idea was the same. "We start with the stuff that everyone loves to hate because it's dull, but it's important. Scales and arpeggios. You know your notes, and you have a very good sense of pitch. We just need to open you up a little and direct a bit... it comes from here," he said, pointing to his diaphragm and moving up his chest. "Rather than in here." He pointed to the top of his nose and his eyes. "Most folks sing just from their mouths. You're a step ahead. You know how to project from down here already, but we need to tone it up, so here we go... you ready?"
Drake started with the sets of three-note progressions to warm him up.
Tyler smiled and went into his 'warm up'. Scales and arpeggios was something he was very familiar with. He 'dove' into them following Drake's keys. He couldn't help being tempted to go into the Aristocats song...The smile was evident on his face as he went through the routine.
Drake smiled and almost laughed. The guy didn't need to warm up.. he was perpetually warmed up and ready for the next in the bag of tricks. "Right... well... you're well off with that already. If you're not careful though, I'll start calling you Toulouse instead of Tyler," he kidded, referring to the kitten that got in most trouble from the Aristocats. "You go by Tyler mostly? You may get stuck with a nickname... another bad habit of mine, just so you know." His gaze melted into the distance as he thought of 'Partly Cloudy', wondering how she was doing since... he shook his head and rolled his injured shoulder a bit, wincing.
The pain helped to clear his thoughts. "Breathing... is next. For that, you'll need to stand up. Now, put your arms out to your side like this as you inhale. Feel your ribcage go up? That's giving you more room.. more capacity. Like a set of bagpipes, you can't wail if your capacity is low, so when you breathe, breathe out to your sides and fill everything. Imagine that you're being puffed up like a balloon and you'll find you can carry those bass notes for an eternity... girls really fall for that," he winked. "Ya know what... let's ease off the lessons for a minute. I'm not feeling I'm helping you a lot at the moment and I need to regroup a bit. Let's just jabber... just talk for a bit... is that okay with you?"
Tyler stood and breathed when Drake instructed him to do so. He smiled and nodded when Drake suggested they just talk. "Alright, I can talk...another of my many talents!" Tyler sat down and looked over at Drake. "Oh yeah I pretty much just go by Tyler or Ty. Didn't get a cool power to have a catchy nickname to go with it. Like my cousin we call him Ludo. Rocks are his friends." Tyler grinned.
He grinned in awe, "Just how damn many cousins do you Veinnas get anyway? Geezo-meezo your family's huge." He ran a hand raggedly through his hair as if fathoming the size of that family caused him a headache. "Rocks are his frie... you're a nut, you know that? That's what I like about you, though. Anything ever get under your skin?" Drake smiled, but was more than distracted.. something obviously kicking at his brain. He still felt that he needed to thank Tyler, but wasn't sure how to bring up the topic.
...just blurt it out, man.. get it over with.. it's gonna eat you alive if you don't let him know... and more over, let him know you know more about his deal, too...
He regarded Tyler with a long look, poised to say something and looking for words that just didn't sound right. "Hey, um.. I've got a confession to make of sorts... sorry to get all serious and hoodoo-voodoo sounding, but I need to clear something with you," he said, sitting down on the edge of the stage and leaned back, hunching his shoulders up to his ears and kicking his feet slowly due to nerves. This could break things clean right here if Tyler didn't understand. "I kinda .. well, hell, no kinda about it.. I need to thank you for saving my life. You first met me about a month ago.. Hunter was laying into me for doing something stupid... if you hadn't have come along when you did, I'd.. um... well.. you'd be out an agent." He had no idea if Hunter ever told Tyler why they were at odds with each other, but if she was in with his cousin that deep, her war with him could cost him his friendship with Tyler. He gave him a tentative look, first to see if he understood, and to see if there was any reaction.
Tyler walked over to the edge of the stage and dropped down to sit beside Drake. He grinned. "So that is why you look familiar?" Ty shook his head. "You look different when you are getting oxygen to your lungs." Tyler nodded his head sagely. "And when I am not stricken with grief." He looked at the floor. "We buried my cousin Jaime that day, Jorden's twin....that's why I was on the freshmen floor that morning." Tyler let out a long breath. "Do you believe in things like fate? Like it was meant for us to meet, become friends?" Tyler didn't ask why Drake and Hunter didn't get along, because he didn't care. There was something about Drake that clicked...and Ty was happy to have found that friendship.
