What is Darkest Lair?
DL = Darkest Lair
Darkest Lair is a free writing role-play, which is set in a nightmare realm, it revolves around the darker inhabitants of the realm. This verse is a place to explore the darker side of our creativity and imagination. There is no one main plot to drive the verse other than it's basic hell realm theme, but there are many individual, minor and subplots to immerse yourself in.
A realm of darkness and chaos...
Many millennia ago, the gods of light and darkness were at battle. Their wars left trails of blood throughout the planes of existence, until finally, only two were left - the most powerful. Knowing that the dark god could only be destroyed by sacrificing its own essence, the deity of light gave up his life to destroy its evil counterpart. It didn't know the cycle of evil and cruelty that it would unleash. The remnants of the dark god's essence and body came together, slowly, over an eternity, drawn together by all of the darkest thoughts and desires of mortal-kind. It became a breeding ground for darkness and cruelty, all things despicable and malicious. As the years went on, dark, twisted versions of animals started to evolve and sentient beings came to explore. Demons, vampires, and other fell creatures were drawn to the innate malefic nature of the realm, while good ones came to try to tame the darkness and convert it. But the will of the dark god itself was against the forces of light, and the world fought against the heroes. It wasn't long before the humans and other benign creatures became slaves to the darker citizens of the land.
The Realm is ruled by one mysterious and dark Queen, said to be the only direct decendant of the dark god who created the Realm.
Each individual kingdom is ruled by its own council or goverment or monarchy, or mythical creature. Each powerful in their own ways and having complete rule over their lands.
The Burning Bar
They have any drink you want, any drink you can imagine, and many you can't. The company is shady, the entertainment is spectacular and the place is always on fire. Best of all? There is an entrance to it in every city in the realm.
Run by a little sweet tart called Suicide Blonde.
The Nightmare Palace
Home of the Nightmare King and Queen along with a few selected others. 'Center' of the Great Below.
The Veiled Palace
the halls and rooms governed by the Veiled One.. The palace is protected like it's mistress by powerful dark magics and it's true location is unknown. It appears and disappears wherever the Veiled Queen desires to be or has an engagement to attend at the moment. The rest of the time it can not be found, except by a select few.
The Monastery
The Monastery is actually made up of several monasteries spaced across a wide tract of mountainous, vicious land, and it acts as the effective prison of the realm. Do you hate someone and want to punish them? Send them to the monastery. There, the Mistress of Pain - the cruel, beautiful leader will analyze (read: tear into) the person's mind, and find the most effective ways to torture him.
The Serpentine Penninsula
The penninsula is a single kingdom, it has one formal ruler -The 'Snake' King. The Serpent Palace is his home and where he rules his court.
Valicynth
A place where anything can be bought or sold - with a price. The area surrounding the city is worked by slaves which are as often the produce as they are the workers. Valicynth is located at a crossroads of the three largest rivers in the continent - the rivers Ash, Blood, and Tears.
Feral Lands
East of the River Tears, the Feral Lands are a world untouched by most of society. It is a place of great, dark pine forests, craggy mountains, and the occasional grassy plain in between, reminiscent of the classical views of eastern Europe. No one is quite sure where the ferals came from, but one thing is for certain - they are of human stock.
Human World
Many of the creatures of BSR like to come to the world of man to hunt, grab a snack, collect slaves and fodder for minions. Some are as much a part of this world as they are the BSR.

All characters of this verse are player creations, ranging from human to any fantasy creature. While the realm is dominated by darker forces and those of light are the slaves and fodder, this does not mean you can not create and play creatures of light.
Characters of the realm fall into four main groups:
Native -Born, created, hatched, etc within the realm.
Willing -Those who have come into the realm of their own accord, those who want to be part of this world but were not born of it.
Trapped -Those who have been forced, dragged, kidnapped, or otherwise unwillingly brought to and 'imprisoned' in the realm.
Fallen -A sub group of the Trapped, the Fallen are those who have been cast down or into the realm as a form of punishment for some deed they have done.
