Near Dusk
The sounds of battle had faded, cannons had given way to guns and the clash of blades and finally the steady sound of boot falls as the other ship was relieved of it's valuable cargo. The spoils went to the victor and this time it was the ship that had attacked the one she'd been held on before. Savy had now been a brief prisoner aboard this ship while the spoils were divided. She'd caused enough trouble to be locked in the brig with chains upon her wrists. She felt justified in all she'd done, fighting back against the men who tried and eventually succeeded in taking her captive. She'd been on the other ship for a couple of days, while her fate was decided but then the attack and once again her future was hanging uncertainly and perhaps she'd have to fight for her life again. A different ship, a different captain and crew.. what would they decide to do with her? She'd gotten used to such conflict but was tired of being alone in this fight and this world that didn't understand or accept her. She growled softly and slammed the length of chain against the bars in frustration, she didn't like being so confined on top of everything else - if only she could get out of this cage! The strap of her dress was ripped and left one shoulder completely bare, her skirt more tattered than cover for her legs, she had some scrapes but most of the deeper wounds had healed to look more minor in the days since she'd first been dragged aboard the other ship. Blood stained one side of her bodice from her prior wounds as well as that of those she'd torn into then and more recently, but to anyone who looked upon her she would seem a petite girl who could hardly hurt anyone.
The waters were calmer now, the discussions over and the treasures divided as fairly as he'd deemed fit. Only one man had been lost this time in the quarrels over the division, an outcome that pleased him greatly. Nance hummed softly as he descended to the bowels of his ship to review one of the items of greater importance in his own share - the girl. Perhaps she was only a cut-purse, but something told him otherwise, something unique in the fiery looks and clawing antics she'd used on his men that inspired him to spare her. "Go about your business elsewhere," he said to the balding man posted at her cage. Another similar stall sat empty though still bore the bloodied remnants of splintery straw and ribboned cloth of its former occupant. He grinned at the girl, a brighter, fully toothed grin that nearly seemed kind as the other man turned away to leave them. He stood close to the barred door to speak quietly, "Rattling your chains to get my attention? You have it. What exactly do you think I should do for you, hm?"
The smile and almost kind expression that greeted her from the other side of the bars were not what she'd been expecting. It threw her enough that she simply stared at the man in silence for a moment, that passed and she sighed as she stepped closer to the bars to get a better look at him. "Opening the door.. letting me out of this cage would be an excellent start." One side of her mouth twitched up in a smile, her bright blue eyes swept over him, giving him a good look up and down, then back to meet his gaze.
He chuckled. "The captain, letting a thief loose about his ship? Why on God's green earth would I do that? I've seen what you've done to my men," he goaded. "What would you plan to steal or break next, I wonder. Of course...," he paused, considering something he kept to himself. "Hm. I'm intrigued to find that answer directly. Stand clear of the door or you'll find those chains around that willowy neck of yours."
At first she opened her mouth to insist that she was no thief, but then reconsidered as he continued. She may not have stolen anything recently and really only took what she needed to survive, but in the end that was still a thief, wasn't it? Savy stepped back from the door, gently spreading her arms as much as the chains would allow to show that she was cooperating and not trying to attack him. An almost smile hinted on her lips and those blue eyes followed his every move, seeming to be curious about him as much as he was interested to find out what she might steal. "Do you truly fault me for resisting? Would you willingly let yourself be put in a cage?" She asked him softly, it wasn't her fault his men weren't equipped to handle her without as much help as it had taken to get her in here.
"Good girl," he remarked as he might to a prized pet. He pulled the key from his belt and unlocked the door. "One hand, please," he said, holding his out to grapple hers and let her loose of the shackles as well. "Unusual woman you are, saying so very little. I don't recall putting a lock on your tongue. What's your name, thief?"
Her eyebrow arched as he spoke, mainly in reaction to his first comment. Good girl? When had she ever been called such? It pulled a soft chuckle from her as she gave him her wrist, her eyes on his hand for a moment before her gaze lifted again. "Unusual is one way to describe me, it is true and much more kind than other things I have been called..... " She paused, shifting her upper half subtly closer to him. "What's your name, captain?" She countered softly, slightly sassy in her tone - a little tease and a bit more of his scent which intrigued her.
"Captain is all you need call me," he said, stiffening and shying away slightly at her approach, cautious of tearing teeth. "For you, Thief it is until I determine otherwise and whether you're deserving of anything more kind. Other hand, please."
"As you wish, Captain." The last word was slightly sharper than the others and she presented him with her other wrist though the rest of her shifted back a half step. Who was he to decide what she deserved? He would fear her or loathe her if he knew anything of what she was, if he didn't know her for what she was, he would think her only a thief or a wh*re - that was what always happened. Something about his scent tugged at her, telling her he was different and she brushed the fingers of her free hand beneath her nose. "How will you determine what I do or don't deserve? Another cage.. flaming hoops I must jump through?"
