If anyone could have seen Jaime and Alice, they would have been surprised by how the girls sat in nearly the same pose, for nearly the same reasons. Alice also worried about the 'salvage' mission that would happen the next morning and what the men might or might not find. She never should have left Josie.. if she hadn't survived, Alice would blame herself. She sat on the floor at the end of the bed, it's shadow hiding her though she didn't mean to hide. Venge could find her if he wanted to, she had left him to sleep and tried to calm her worries on her own. A few tears slipped down her cheeks and she sniffled softly, reaching to wipe them away.
Unexpected sounds often perked his attention, even from the stillest, deepest of sleep. Though he seemed to be resting, his mind was aflutter, going over the usual drill of hauling in salvage which was all he'd expected would be left of the wreck after so many hours already. Daylight would tell them the rest of the story and it wasn't far off. The soft sounds in the room dissolved the logical order of his thoughts and drew him groggily up to his elbows to look around for the source of the sound, expecting to find Walsh staring at him, waiting for something. There was no such nightmare, only a slender, sullen shadow that drew his attention to the end of the cot. He pulled his palm over his eyes to try and focus, snuffling in return, "You should be sleeping. What's the matter?"
Alice froze for a couple of seconds, peeking up over the end of the bed to look at him from where she sat on the floor. Thankfully it was dark and she looked away quickly, wiping at her cheeks again. "I'm sorry.. I didn't mean to wake you."
She glanced and darted like a bird, herself, as if hiding from a cat. He grinned a little, but something in her voice concerned him. He crawled and turned to lay flat on his stomach, perching his chin on his hands to keep them still for the moment. "You didn't," he clarified softly. He couldn't keep still long, reaching to stroke her hair lightly. "You also didn't answer the question. Why are you hiding down here in the dark, hah? Want a drink? Long day ahead tomorrow. Might help you sleep through most of it while I'm not here."
She shook her head, bringing her hand up, curled against her mouth as if to hold back the tide of her tears. "I left her behind." She whispered, the sob muffled behind her hand. "She's probably dead and I'm here with you.." Her head shook, she didn't deserve to have him.
He was expecting something along the lines of unexpected noises startling her, or perhaps bad dreams shaking her to the floor where she'd stayed. "Her? Someone on the ship, you mean? Alice, you're strong and you're alive because of fate... and my incredibly good luck, thank you, but nothing you've done or didn't do has caused anyone harm. You left no one behind," he said, trying to reassure her.
