Feb 2, 2013 3 days after crash
The dust was settling while emotions flared. Dozens had been lost in the crash and in the chaos that followed it, but even the ship sat dark now... a guarded and creaking shell of former life. Justin hadn't needed to say much of anything to the soldier sitting at the ripped seam in the hull where there had been a grand corridor lined with viewing sensors that relayed the once beautiful view of the space they traversed. There was nothing to see now but swirling dust and only the faintest glimmer of hope. Justin had held out his hands, standing tall and quiet, offering anything he could to pull supplies from the ship as the teams had been doing in shifts for days while the light lasted. Medical teams tended those they could save and those with tools were burning and burying those they couldn't. Justin had no tools and no family, only two empty hands and an overwhelming need to help his fellow settlers who still had a chance. He was led into an eroding cargo area with two other men, neither familiar other than faces in the meeting hall where meals were scraped together and conversations had simmered over game boards in darker hours. Their instructions were clear to take only what could be carried safely and to watch for anything unstable. No one was going anywhere, so there was no rush, they were told. No rush, until he heard the box shift and he saw a hand move. "Hey! Hey!!! I think we got someone in here!"
Josie had come in here with the proper authorized officer just before the sudden crash, she called it sudden because there was no real warning, which is why such a great number had died. Of course she had no idea yet of how many had been killed or that her family was part of the 'over half' of the colonists and personnel who had died. She was supposed to be retrieving something for one of the other colonists from a storage unit, the next thing she knew, she was being thrown off balance and things were tumbling. Something big hit her and the next thing she remembered was waking up briefly, the officer was talking and telling her to be calm. Surprisingly she'd been more calm than he was, she listened as he tried to call for help but his com was not responding. He was trapped as she was under a pile of.. stuff. She'd begun calling it crap after sitting beneath it unable to move for a long time, she had no idea how long passed only that she grew more thirsty, hungry, and weak. Josie had passed out or fallen as sleep several times which only served to confuse her more about how much time passed.
Eventually the officer stopped talking back and she stopped trying to get him to. She'd heard movement echoing through the ship now and again but so far no one had found her, she figured this area wasn't a priority as people really weren't supposed to be in here. She'd stopped trying to get anyone's attention and saved what strength she had for surviving to the next minute, the longer she lived, the more likely someone would eventually find her.
She'd passed out again, completely unaware that someone had finally decided to clear the room she was in, her eyes slowly blinked at the shouting. At this point she didn't know if they even meant her or had found someone else, if she had moved it had been nothing more than a twitch. "Help." She tried to shout back but it was more of a croak from a dry throat. Whatever box moved, she'd be glad to know it hadn't fallen on her face, she already had enough boxes and other debries on top of her, keeping her wedged and trapped so she couldn't move much.
Maybe he'd imagined movement in the hand of an unseen owner beneath a pile he'd almost begun to climb. Justin swallowed hard, leaning down and staring at the fingers as if waiting for them to grasp hold of him and pull him closer.
"Get her out! Move!" One of the other men shouted back, starting to pull at the debris to help dig her out.
Justin lunged at him, pointing out the precarious pile that was clearly unstable. If the wrong item was moved, the remaining pieces were going to collapse in on her. "Lieutenant, we need your help!" He called out for their team leader and let the man go though he stared him down. "Too many already. Take it easy. We'll get her out," he explained calmly, glancing back at the hand and the shadows that held the girl underneath the stacks.
The soldier came around to their side of the bay, ready to break them apart with rifle fire if necessary. The rifle was quickly stowed as he saw where Justin's attention was directed. The man nodded and the other beside Justin backed down, awaiting instructions.
The three moved around the pile, lifting and bracing what they could to pull the wall of debris away enough. Cleared enough to see her head and face, Justin leaned down again, holding up a box that the fourth man finally grabbed free. He reached down for her. Seeing the bit of color in her face, he smiled. "You missed breakfast," he said as if waking a daughter from a late nap.
She could hear them moving and the comment of 'her' made Josie hope they meant her! She couldn't move her head to look because a box or something had fallen in just the right way to catch her hair and keep her further pinned. Once they started moving things in the pile on top of her and cleared her head, she felt some relief. Brown eyes stared up at the man who leaned down and reached for her, though a little teary at finally being found and still being alive. She chuckled softly but winced a bit and just tried for a small smile instead. "Is there any orange juice left?" Her voice was a semi hoarse whisper from lack of water for days as well as the yelling she'd done when they were first trying to get some attention.
"Sure," he nodded, not sure there was water let alone fancy juice, but she needed the reassurance. He was relieved she could move her head and speak, though she was clearly in danger. "No room service, though, so let's get you over to the mess hall. How are your toes?"
"I don't know I haven't seen them in awhile.. with as hard as I got hit.. I think I lost a shoe." She admitted with another slight smile, she was clearly bruised, banged, and cut up from the pile of things that had fallen and it had been heavy enough to keep her pinned for days. "They wiggle." She said after a moment and an attempt to do just that. Her fingers also flexed and clenched, she felt sore and stiff but considering that her head could have been squished, she wasn't that bad off.
The other three had continued to loosen the pile and located the key piece to tumble the stack apart away from her. As soon as the boxes and items moved, Justin braced himself to help her out. "Gonna have to trust me. Think you can grab hold and hang on?"
She flinched as the pile started to tumble, expecting to be burried again but she wasn't. It only took her a second to nod to the man who had been talking to her while the others dug her out. It was going to hurt, she knew this and tried to brace herself for that, she reached to wrap around his shoulders. "Go for it."
