evening
Flo's Diner
a very tall, rather well groomed and very wide awake shy-looking guy who is probably giving her the creeps a little bit was sitting and admiring Flo.
she'll come pour him a cup of coffee and smile.. staying at his table with a small smile and a look as if to say -what??
"Thanks. I have to tell you, this is -the- best coffee. Ever. I mean that," Ray said, honest and sweet about it. He stared another moment then picked up his cup, or tried. He wasn't watching when he missed and sloshed some over the table. "Oops. Oh man. That's going to stain," he said, more worried about the paper placemats than anything.
"It's okay.. let me get this.. relax.." She smiled and set the pot down and pulled her cloth from where it was tucked in her apron. She leaned over the table a little as she started to mop up the mess. "Are you alright? You seem a little.. on edge?" She gave him a little more genuine smile this time.
"Me? Um, on edge... nope. No, I'm fine," he smiled again, wondering if that meant he looked bad. She definitely didn't look bad. He was seeing more than his dream had shown him as she leaned and mopped.
She flashed him that pretty smile again as she lifted his soiled placemat, intending to replace it with another she retrieved from an empty table near him. "There.. all better.." Her voice had this natural softness to it that made you feel special, like she just might mean it when she called you 'hun'. "If there is anything else I can do for you, you just ask, alright? And don't be shy, hun."
"Okay," he smiled brighter if it was even possible. "I'm RayR... Ray, just Ray," he said, holding out his hand. That was right, wasn't it? He wasn't sure.
"Just Ray.. okay.. Nice to meet you Ray. I'm Florica... Flo.." She wiped her hand down her apron just to be sure it wasn't wet before she reached to take his hand firmly in hers.
"I know," he said. He'd actually come in before a few times, but he was usually with... "Yup, just by myself tonight," he added. He didn't know if she recognized him or not. The town was only so big.
"Aw.. all alone? Hmm I'd think a handsome guy like you would have a date tonight." She smiled again, lingering because she was curious and he'd been staring at her for awhile before she'd come over. It had gotten kind of creepy.. but he seemed nervous when she came over, though fairly nice now. She had this feeling that he had a reason.. like he had something to say that he hadn't spit out yet.
"Not really so much alone now. I mean, you're here, I'm here..," he pointed out. More people came in the front door and he frowned. This just wasn't going at all like he'd planned.
Okaaay... so maybe he was a little weird. She looked at the group that walked in, biting her lip as she counted. Not too many.. yet.. she motioned to one of the girls to watch her tables and she turned her attention back to Ray. "Do you mind if I sit down for a minute?"
"Do I mind?" He was shocked, flattered. "Please, no, sit. Sit here, that's fine," he said, sitting up straighter and making room.
She chuckled a little and slid into the seat, looking him over a little more as she shifted. "Mm.. thanks.. I don't get alot of chances to take a minute.. you know?... Nice shirt by the way.. the color is very flattering on you."
"I do know. You work pretty hard when it gets busy," Ray nodded, trying not to overdo it. He looked down at his shirt and back with his winning smile. The one-button open must have been perfect. "You like it?"
"Yeah.. I wouldn't have said it if I didn't." She bit her lip again and chuckled softly. "So.. you've been in here before.. I thought you looked a little familiar, but theres so many people in and out of here.. umm yeah.. so.."
"You remember me? Thanks, that's really nice." Ray was at a loss about what to say next. The dream was so easy, but this wasn't. "You have a nice... um... laugh. I like your laugh."
"Thank you.." His compliment made her laugh softly again and she looked away for a moment, his nervousness was rubbing off on her. Maybe it was something deeper that had her acting a little out of sorts. She turned back and her giggle was sweet sounding as she leaned in closer to speak to him. "So.. are you going to ask me or not?" Her eyes looked right at his face, not taunting, not shy, just curious.
"Ask you... ?" Deer in the headlights. Who told her? How did she know? "Did... did you have the same dream?"
"Umm.." She laughed again and even graced him with a slight blush. "..in my dream you had a private jet waiting and you wisked me off to a tropical island and we got married on the beach... in our bare feet." She added, watching his reaction with a slight smile. Of course she didn't know he worked for the mayor and actually could get the jet.
"I did? I mean... well, I could. Would you like that? I was thinking Vegas, but I could work on my tan. You could work on yours too on the beach.. barefoot. I like that. What are you doing this weekend?"
She was thrown by his reply and she stammered over the begining of hers. "I.. well.. do you consider today part of the weekend? It's friday and all.. I'm working now.. and if I were going to leave I'd kind of have to do it now.. before the big rush hits, cause I'll never get out of here then."
"I know. That's why I came in early. I could rub your feet. I have a thing for feet," he confided quietly. "I have to call my boss... the jet thing, but I bet it would be okay. I mean, that was a yes? Would you? I'm serious, are you serious?"
She looked at his face for a minute, studying it.. he was serious. She didn't know a thing about him other than his first name, he had decent taste in clothes and a really nice smile.. she couldn't marry someone she didn't know! "Yes. That was a yes. I have to go out back for a few minutes to hang up my apron and get my purse. So if you're still here when I come back out.. then you can rub my feet on the plane." She smiled, chuckling a little nervously. "Sound good?" She started to shift to stand up, still looking at him and moving slow enough that he could stop her if he wanted to.
"As long as you come back, okay?" He seemed genuinely worried that she might just slip out the back and run. "I should have worn the tie," he muttered as she backed away.
"I wouldn't have talked to you if you had worn a tie tonight." She smiled, giving him a wink as she stood and then reached for the coffee pot she'd set down before. "I'll be right back.." She assured him, taking her pot and heading off to the kitchen area.
