February - Year 1
after: Lessons
Knowing that he'd managed to get her all kinds of flustered now, Everitt hoped that meant she'd be expecting him when he came to call later... all upset that she didn't follow him.. he had a present for her after all. It was possible she could always bump into him as she hurried out the back of the schoolhouse to head home, but he imagined her druthers were not to bump into his anything after their first encounter, not a proper lady. His mind was made up though and he'd tell her so. It would be very improper for him to come calling at her home with her there alone, though... which of course meant that's exactly where he was likely to be waiting for her cause she wasn't...
She sighed as she opened the door to her little house, tired from a day of cleaning and unpacking the books that had been sent along with other supplies for the school. Her hair had come more untucked from the pins and gently cascaded down over her shoulders. As she closed the door behind her and turned into the front room of the house she startled at the man, not realizing for a moment who it was and a small alarmed cry broke free from her lips. Her hand over he chest as her heart slammed against it she stared wide eyed at him. He had her more than a little flustered now -she was quite surprised. "Wh.. what.. would my father say to your being here!?" Was all she could stammer out, not even being able to properly great him after the scare.
He was even more convinced now that no woman should live alone. Lucky for her it was himself in her chair and that he was the sheriff afterall, but that didn't excuse his behavior any more than any man her daddy had every right to shoot. He couldn't fault the man if he tried. "If he's worth his salt, he'd let the double barrel full o' shot speak for him." He smiled, not getting up just yet.
She was begining to recover now that she saw it was him and not someone else, though still it was unnerving to find him sitting there. Her eyes shifted around the room and she licked her lips nervously. "I suppose then, for you -it's a good thing my father is back east." She replied, breathing more normally and even managing a slight smile for him, still uncertain of his intentions toward her at the moment.
He agreed to that, too. "Yup. Unless his reach is really long... or his aim is just that good." He seemed far from worried about what the man might do from outside the county, though. Other than a few improper words and ideas, he'd done nothing yet.
Elizabeth found herself chuckling at his humor and shaking her head slightly. "No.. my father is a society man. He has other people do his dirty work for him." She couldn't picture her father shooting someone like that, but ordering on of his men to do it for him? Well that was perfectly imaginable.
"Yup.. that's what I meant by 'reach'," he chuckled, finding himself agreeing with her again. "Hired guns to protect what he cares about? Here I thought that might be my job," he teased.
"Oh.." She nodded and blushed that she'd said and he'd known and meant. Clearing her throat a little as the subject continued. "..and yes he does.. but.. not entirely on his good side right now. He's not very happy that his daughter.. 'that his little girl has gone off to that god forsaken land to live amoung the vagrants'.." She quoted the man with a look that held the defiance in her that brought her out here against her father's advice.
"Could just tell him you got someone to watch her back... and her front... and her cute little dimpled face..," he was doing a terrible job of keeping the smile from beaming brighter.
He was awfully bold and she turned some shade of red as he made his comments and she swallowed, taking a moment before she could come up with voice to answer back. "I do not believe he wishes to hear such things." She felt very warm with the thought of him 'watching' her.
"Aaww.. now ain't that the cutest thing? I can see why they called ya 'Rose'," he chuckled out, though it was meant as endearment. Watching how it made her eyes just sparkle alive made him laugh inside and he couldn't help it.
She blushed a shade deeper at his compliments about her rosing up and she felt very warm, shifting and fussing with her skirts a bit. "Oh no you don't.. you just stop that kind of talk right now, you hear?" She scolded him softly, finding she didn't have much to spit back at him as he was making her feel all funny.
