nearing sunset
It was no use. The dog was gone and not coming to his whistle. It was probably smarter than he was and was likely already back in the truck waiting for him.. if he could find it. He put his fingers to the corners of his mouth again and the sound startled a few small birds overhead that were trying to nestle down for the night. Not so much as a bark came back to him. The compass he'd thought he'd brought wasn't on its hook on his pack and every way he turned, the light seemed the same level of dimming. How could he be lost? He'd been in these woods a dozen times at least and never got lost... and never lost his scout, either. He looked for moss, for tracks, for anything that would indicate a direction and tried to keep going straight in the direction he thought would lead him back to the truck, but it wasn't the truck he found. "What the...? How'd I miss this place?" He asked out loud, seeing a nestled cottage that seemed to have been as lost to time as he was to his retriever. "Okay... joke's over! Give me back my dog! Hello??" He called out, keeping the arrow in his fingers ready for anything that didn't look friendly.
Century was quite aware of the man's approach, how could she not be when he'd made enough racket to wake the forest for miles? The dog had approached more quietly and introduced himself in a more dignified and civilized manner than his so called owner. She'd been content for awhile now to simply sit on the porch and watch as the light and colors shifted as the sun began to move toward setting. The dog was content to lay with his head in her lap and let his master scream and whistle while he had his ears scratched now and then. The man found himself in the small circle where her home rested within a gap in the trees, her eyebrow arched as she saw him with his bow and her eyes sparkled with amusement. She might look strange to him with her manner of dress, looking as if she sat in a bra like top and a tiny skirt that barely hid anything, the fabric and lace were made of plants and she might seem as out of place as her home. Of course in the middle of the forest they seemed to fit quite well. "Lost your way, did you?" She called back in her soft and gentle voice, ignoring his seeming threats for the moment.
"What?" Did she actually have to ask him that? It wasn't like she'd invited him for a party. He looked around for cameras and crew, wondering what he'd really stumbled into. "Yeah, I lost my way. Lost my dog, but it looks like you found him... or he found you just fine. And now? I'm about to lose my mind. Which way is it back to the main road?"
She giggled at his remarks and the sound seemed to move around the trees and rustle the leaves as it made it's way to and then past him. "I was here.. he found me.." She shrugged one nearly bare shoulder and stretched her long lean legs, wiggling her bare toes before rising to stand. She gestured in the general direction he'd come from to indicate where the road was. "You'll never make it before dark... and you don't want to be lost in these woods after dark." She mentioned as casually as if she were saying 'nice day'.
