He'd tried to get the message out, telling him to be careful. It had been three weeks already and no reply had come. Instead what had come was the returned letter, refused, along with the invitation... a warning in and of itself to pack and leave before things became more dangerous. He didn't argue... how could you argue with them? Their beguiling blue eyes... if that was the only reason, he'd still have accepted the offer. Mitch had brought most of his books, leaving behind only those that normal libraries tended to have about mythical creatures, not the ones like these that contained the true research. He looked over the hand-bound volumes, tilting his head to adjust his focus around the grimey, narrow lenses that sat on his nose. He carefully placed each one on the shelves he'd been provided, every now and then pausing to glance to a corner or over his shoulder. He set the volume in his hand down and leaned on the expanse of desk that held more boxes. "It's not polite to stare," he finally said, glancing around to rid himself of the chill of feeling 'eyes' watching him.
"I didn't want to intrude." Answered the sweet sounding female voice which at first seemed to belong to the shadow cast by one of the large support pillars. The voice soon took form as the young woman stepped out from the shadows, her bright blue eyes seeming to glow softly until she melted fully into his line of sight. ".. and I wasn't staring... I was watching." She clarified with a soft smile as she clasped her hands behind her, seeming to be shy around him.
He looked up at the forming figure over the top of the brass rims. He shook his head slightly, still watching her as she moved closer. "I'd have offered you a chair," he smiled, reaching to push the lenses up before they fell off. He picked up the volume again and looked for the shelf of similar tomes to place it. "I'd at least have offered you some conversation. I'm not very good at starting it though, unless I'm talking to myself, which I almost thought I was." He turned back around to grab another book once he located the shelf, smiling again, being glad to know she was actually there and not his imagination.
