August 2, 2007 Dallas, Tx
He couldn't breathe. How many miles had he gone? He'd lost count after the fourth creature crawling out of an alley had been pounded into the gravel with the nearest thing he could find. His hands were sore, but not cut at least. The last 'thing' he'd encountered was nearly his height and was stronger than anything he'd ever met up with. He hadn't heard of that before in the reports. Maybe it was just one more part of the cover-up, that these things were getting stronger... probably with more people they ate! All he knew for sure was he wasn't feeling very strong at the moment. He needed food and someplace to catch his breath. The black smoke was thick on the corner where the gas station had been. He wasn't going that way. He turned down the street to skirt around the fire pit and came up to the corner store across from it. It hadn't burned yet, but probably would as soon as the wind changed again. The windows were intact? Even with the raging fire so close as the road's width, it was becoming unusual to find store fronts that hadn't been destroyed. Getting inside would be the next issue. The sudden sound was a familiar one and one he dreaded, the growl and hiss, then scream of one of the creatures. This time it was a solo one, leaping out from behind the propane rack at him. He was bare handed, having dropped the trash can lid somewhere. He glanced at the rack that someone had tried to break the lock from, seeing the marks where the paint had been gouged and scraped away from something heavy. Braver soul than me, he thought, considering the explosives lined up behind it and ready to go. Ready to go, alright, he sniffed, dodging the creature and hoping the lock had broken enough. He leapt at the rack and tugged the door once... twice... jumped away, then kicked it and tugged a third time. The restraining piece holding the lock snapped away with the lock still secure to it as it fell. The door swung open and he grabbed a cannister from inside it, swinging it at the creature that clawed after him. The first swing missed and spun him around. He glanced again quickly at the windows, wondering if any were broken in and if any of these things were inside. He swung again, this time spinning the creature around as he struck it on the shoulder. He swung once more with the cannister and blood sprayed as the jaw was struck, then the back of the head as he kept after the thing, swinging and eventually stopping. His chest hurt and he was nearly done enough to lay out on the concrete and melt into it himself. The dead thing was reason enough to move, though. He didn't want to take the chance. He pulled himself to his feet and picked up the cannister. If the door didn't open, he was breaking a window. He tried the door and hoped it was unlocked, hoping more that none of these things was lurking inside.
The girl inside the store was oblivious to the gruesome fight taking place outside, the unbroken glass was thick enough to block the noise - especially toward the back of the store where she was. Savy knew just a little about medicines to be hitting the pharmacy for what it was worth.. if she happened to get sick.. she shuddered at the thought but it was better to be prepared. The store hadn't been looted which was a blessing but also meant it could become a target if there was anyone else left besides her to need supplies. She was considering how she might take more with her or if it would be at all possible for her to stay here awhile. She was hungry, tired and would love a shower and change of clothes, she'd grabbed a bottled water off a shelf and was sucking it down as she tossed various pills into a cloth bag.
He tried to see inside first. The glass had been tinted just enough to keep the brutal late afternoon sun at a minimum but also kept looters from peeking in like he was. The lights were off inside which did not help to determine if inside was more safe than out here. "Here goes nothin'," he sighed, trying the door latch to find it was of course locked. He wasn't breaking a hole in the obvious way in. He grabbed a second cannister and carried them around to the back. If there was a way, he'd get more of them for use later, but he had nothing to carry them in and the fire was too close to consider trying to come back for them. There were no windows on the side of the building but there was a dock door with a vent window above it. The rail around it was just high enough for someone his height to break and climb in. "You go first," he said, taking a lump of loose concrete from the ramp and battering the glass with his sleeve-covered fist until he broke enough free to climb in, rolling the cannisters in ahead of himself, first.
Savy was coming out of the pharmacy area when she thought she heard a noise but didn't know if it was outside or if it was somwhere inside the store. The back room, stock area was dark and she wasn't brave enough to go investigate back there.. at least not without a flash light. She glanced around the aisles, not seeing any movement but still she crouched low as she moved along to find some batteries and a flashlight, she was sure there must be some, somewhere in this place. She scanned toward the front of the store, creeping up to look out the windows from a distance, she still didn't see anything moving. Her teeth tugged on her lower lip as she fought panic, maybe whatever had made the noise had gone.. she hoped but didn't fully believe that. She was almost tired enough to simply give up, every person she'd met in the past month had died within days, some within hours - somehow she'd managed to make it and was getting to the point where it was starting to mess with her head. She started back down the aisle, not really knowing what she was doing but simply taking things from the shelves to tuck into her bag. Her eyes stung with tears that she made no effort to wipe away, letting them wash streaks down her dusty cheeks.
The second canister was dropped in to the shelf, cooler, boxes... whatever was on the other side of the door waiting for him to land on next. He didn't hear them clatter loudly to the floor immediately, so there was something to break his fall. He hoped it wasn't anything resembling human or infected. He hadn't heard the screams or hisses through the window, yet, so he ruled out infected things for now. He climbed up and crawled in, flopping down inside on an unsteady pile of broken-down cardboard that had been waiting for the recycling truck - dry, beautiful, cushioning, but damned slippery cardboard. He'd tried to land on his feet, but the pile shifted, taking him and the rolling cannisters several feet across the floor, sprawling him down to his knees. He stayed there, listening closely to any sound other than his own breathing. Had anything or anyone heard him? He reached out slowly for one of the cannisters, expecting something to jump out any moment.

He heard nothing close to him, but there was some distant shuffling. It wasn't the sound of rats, nor dragging feet that he'd found to be typical of the infected people. They moved raggedly and eratically and though some seemed stiff and slow, he'd been the lucky one to encounter a few that could run and moved damned fast. This was rapid, but deliberate movement... and the rattle of pills? He could use some! The lack of hum of the air conditioning and lights made a difference - an eerie difference, he thought, shuddering a little as he slid and stepped his way off the cardboard. His small maglight from his pocket was enough to get him through the room, but it was going to need new batteries soon. He'd been nursing the ones he had, but they were about shot. Get more batteries if he could find them, then come back here and party! He chuckled to himself - right, no parties for a while, but he could set himself up nicely with the leftovers in this place. He found the door of the back room and the fire case next to it still housing a fire axe. Good to know it was there, but drawing blood wasn't his first choice when bludgeons and running like hell worked just fine. He was reminded of running as he finally took his first safe breath. He heard it then. The nearly even sounds a few aisles away. Someone was there piling pills and boxes - someone running like him? He moved closer, flashlight in one hand but off and a propane cannister in the other.
It was probably a good thing for her, that he wasn't one of the crazed things running around - she wasn't really in any condition to defend herself at the moment. "Pathetic." She actually whispered to herself about herself as she at least tried to pull it together. She blinked at the tears fighting to stop them, though her cheeks were still damp and streaked, the blue of her eyes shining brighter with the left over moisture. She froze suddenly and her head turned to the side, her heart pounding in her chest - she'd let her guard down and now thought she heard something again. She had an aluminum bat for a weapon and she was thankful to feel the weight of it in one hand, at least she hadn't 'lost' it in her moments of despair. Savy let the item in her hand drop into her bag and then both hands gripped the bat, raising it up a little as she took a few slow steps to the end of the aisles.
He saw her then and he took a step back. Her! Geez, it had to be a girl? She was ready to hit a homer and he was ready to just hit the floor and stay there a while whether she hit him or not. "Do us both a favor and put it down," he said, hoping she would if he sounded sane enough.
Savy's eyes widened as she came around and saw the tall guy who took a step back when he saw her. Her mouth fell open in a gasp of shock as he spoke like a sane, rational, person and didn't attack her. "You're..." Her voice was hushed but clearly showed her surprise, the bat slowly lowered and her eyes skittered around behind him, searching for any others but then came back to him. Savy swallowed and stared at him, goodness he was tall!
He nodded. "Tired of fighting? Yeah. I am. How... how did you get in here?" He glanced back at the stock room he'd been in and then toward the front of the store where the glow was dappled from the billowing smoke across the road. The door was just as he'd found it. He thought a moment. Did he even try to open the stock room door first? He rolled his eyes as he thought about that.
