The Hotel
A few days into lurking around the halls of this place was beginning to build Pete back up to his old self again. The fresh air, the peace and the feeling of safety was more than he could have imagined the week before. Having all the cuts and sores vanish already was also more that he'd thought about ever happening in his lifetime. Doctors, healers, people who treated him as normal... it was astounding to him. It was also making him stir crazy, wanting to put his abilities to use for something... useful. Initimidation had its place, but was that all he'd ever be good for? Or running the marathons which he missed and would probably never partake in again, nothing that public, anyway. At least today he felt useful, unloading supplies from the truck. He stood beside the vehicle a long moment, arms folded and his face knotted in a focused thought once the tailgate was down. He stared at the stack then back at the empty road and its long dusty trail back into the woods. Something wasn't quite adding up.
For Gabriella coming to this place was a way of coming full circle and finding the answers she needed and the closure to her previous relationship. Sure it was over but certain things had been left unhealed and unresolved, both she and Aberto agreed on this and were getting along very well. There was love and affection between them, more like that of old friends or even family but they weren't in love and had no interest in getting back together. Their marriage had been arranged and though they cared for each other and played their roles it had none of the fire of most 'old flames'. Over the days since she'd arrived, the two had several conversations and she felt they were in a good place.
Better than a good relationship with her ex husband, she'd found Pete on the road to get here and had brought him with her after the incident in the diner. It was a surprising twist of fate and one that she was thankful for despite the violence surrounding their meeting. Pete was like them in the way that he was also a mutant, but he wasn't like anyone she'd ever met. Most of the time she felt like a school girl with a crush, starry eyed for the cute guy.. but it was wonderful to feel that lift in her spirit whenever Pete was around, which sharing a room meant he was around alot.
Gabriella came up to the truck that was waiting to be unloaded and grabbed a piece of his tight buns as she passed him. "Hey you." She murmured as she shifted to hop up into the back of the truck to grab a box.
His tail twitched before the rest of him budged, swishing up to the air after her hand though she slipped just out of reach. He was distracted by his thoughts but not so much he didn't sense her heat behind him. "Nice warm hands," he winked, finally unfolding his arms, one hand reaching back to pat the love-pinch she'd giving him. "Warm heart. I keep it back there for safe keeping. So are you in the mood for stupid questions?" He asked, stepping up to start hauling.
She glanced at him with that smile of hers that said she was almost always thinking something naughty.. and when she was around him, that was mostly true. "Do any of these questions involve my warm hands and your bum or other places?" She wiggled an eyebrow at him and laughed a little bit. "Alright.. yes.. ask away, though for the record I don't believe you could ask a stupid question."
"It might later when the bed of the truck's empty," he suggested, looking at the load they had and how many trips it might take. "It's about all this stuff. And how it got here. I haven't seen, heard or smelled any other cars or anything in the time I've been here. But... here this one is. And armed for bear. What is all this stuff?"
"This stuff? Oh.. sexy underthings.. this is really my luggage. Yeah underwear and shoes, it's a girl thing." She grinned at him again and waited a moment to see if he'd take her seriously, even for a minute.
"MMmmm.. no, I doubt it. There's not enough boxes for it to be shoes. And way too much for underthings. The sexiest doesn't fit in a box, but it would fit right here," he said patting his back pocket again. "Real close to my heart. Seriously, is this supplies for just us...? If we were getting snowed in for winter I might believe it, but he's expecting others, isn't he?"
"Just us? Pete there are at least ten people here.. and yes, more are expected.. well hoped for, if they make it here." The smile faded and her expression clouded with worry for a moment. "We'd better get this stuff in."
"Ten? Ok, so that anwers that part, but if more are expected... just saying they're not coming by truck like this. But they are coming, or trying to? Like me? Do they know how to get here?" He was starting to feel he had more and more questions coming. "I was lucky you found me, but what about them?"
"I don't know Pete." Her voice was quiet and she ran her hand over the box instead of picking it up. "If they get close enough we might be able to get to them.. Not everyone makes it."
"Are we supposed to go look and try?" He reached up for the box she was contemplating over. He needed to keep moving and keep doing something. His tail reached around his side and anchored against the edge of the side bed, the tip running over the tarp hooks like her fingers over the box. "Maybe... it's something I could do?"
"No!" She said it more sharply than she'd meant to and her head snapped toward him a tremor of fear running through her and shining in her eyes before she turned away and grabbed another box. "You're not.. just not .. don't go out looking. Claude knows when they're coming.. when they are close enough we go meet them to bring them the rest of the way."
